Avery Pieri’s Goal the Difference in 3-2 Win at Biola

LA MIRADA – Piper Matson broke a 1-1 tie early into the second half but Avery Pieri's insurance goal later was cashed in as the policy allowed Chico State to leave Biola with a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats complete the true non-conference schedule 4-2 while the Eagles remain in search for their first win, falling to 0-5-1.

The first 40 minutes into the match was quiet, as there were five combined shots. Chico State got on the board at 39:25. Summer Baron had a 1-v-1 battle with an Eagles defender near the right corner but managed to send the ball in where Mikayla Robertson headed the ball right between the legs of Biola keeper Autum Monty for her first goal of the season.

Biola's Peyton Nelson managed to get the Eagles on the board before halftime.

Matson's first goal of the season in the 56th minute was a beauty. Jiana Martin couldn't push the ball forward from the top of the box but she found Matson on the right flank and made a good pass to her. Going up two defenders in the box, Matson made one touch inside the goal box before firing the ball over Monty to give the 'Cats the lead back.

The insurance goal in the 63rd minute was brilliantly played. Natalie Mendoza dribbled the ball to midfield before passing to an open and charging Pieri. Pieri went up against an Eagle defender at the top of the box and fired by her and over Monty for the eventual match-winning goal.

Chico State held a 10-9 edge in the shooting column, with both sides each taking six shots in the second half.

Biola did score the second goal with 47 seconds left in regulation.

Peyton Johnson made her collegiate debut in goal this afternoon, making one save in each half.

Chico State will head to Turlock to play Stanislaus State Saturday at 7 p.m. Though they are CCAA foes, this match will not count towards the conference table. They will go on the CCAA record in Chico on November 2.
