‘Cats Can’t Avoid Sweep Against Toros

CARSON – The Chico State volleyball team forced extra rallies in the third set but couldn't secure the win as Cal State Dominguez Hills completed the sweep (23-25, 12-25, 25-27) at the Torodome Saturday afternoon.

Coming off a difficult defeat to the defending CCAA champions Cal State LA to start conference play less than 24 hours ago, the Wildcats (3-3, 0-2 CCAA) put up a battle with a surging Toros (7-2, 2-0 CCAA).

Zoe DiNardo completed a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. Brook Ono also had double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs. Gwyneth Wentzel leaped over her career-best in the kills department, tallying nine.

The 'Cats hit .087 on the day after making 126 attack attempts.

Chico State had to play cat-and-mouse with Dominguez Hills in the first set. The Wildcats would go on a 5-1 run at one point to tie the match at least twice. The Toros responded with four straight wins and was on set points for three rallies. A service error followed by back-to-back kills from Wentzel and DiNardo made it a one-point score.

Dominguez Hills took control of the second set using a 7-2 momentum at midpoint.

The Toros won three of the first four serves to start the third set. Chico State trailed by as many as three and found a rally that enabled it to tie the game at 14 points apiece. Wentzel and DiNardo each had a kill and Ono had a service ace that allowed the Wildcats to catch up.

Chico State found its backs against the wall when Dominguez Hills was at match point 24-22. DiNardo and Alexis Presser came up clutch with back-to-back kills to tie the game. The Toros would go on match point again but Wentzel helped the 'Cats tie the set again. However, the Toros got the two points needed to complete the three-set sweep.

After playing the first six matches on the road, the Wildcats will open Acker Gym for the first time on the new school year, hosting Sonoma State Friday at 5 p.m. The Seawolves opened their conference play with an impressive three-set sweep over No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino and is set to play San Francisco State later in the evening.
