CHICO, Calif. - The Chico State women's soccer team clinched the final spot in the CCAA postseason tournament despite the result from Thursday's regular-season finale against Stanislaus State. They will travel south to Los Angeles this weekend for a first-round match.
Stanislaus went up two over the 'Cats, and the home side could not quite cut the deficit in time.
Avery Pieri was the closest Wildcat to adding a goal to the board, but the Warriors keeper made a desperate leap to keep the ball out of the net.
In the closing minutes of the match, Brynn Howard almost beat the keeper with a chance heading for the upper right corner, but another save from the Warriors keeper kept the Wildcats out.
The offensive leader on the day for Chico was Summer Baron, who recorded three shots but could not test the keeper.
After clinching the sixth spot in the standings, the Wildcats will travel south to Los Angeles to take on the Golden Eagles again in Southern California in the first round of the conference tournament. The winner of Sunday's quarterfinal match will head to Monterey Bay to take on the No.2 seed Cal State San Marcos Cougars in the next round.
The last time these two teams faced off, the Golden Eagles won in a 2-0 road loss for the 'Cats. Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. and broadcast on the CCAA Network.
