It was quite a week for Chico State golfer Tyler Ashman. Last Thursday, July 21, the senior from Clovis captured Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar recognition for his efforts in the classroom and on the course. And Monday, Ashman earned alternate status for the United States Amateur Championship, shooting 9-under par over two rounds at Butte Creek Country Club.

Chico State is one of only 66 NCAA Division II institutions to have a student-athlete honored with the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar award. Ashman is one of 174 Division II student-athletes honored.

To be eligible for nomination, an NCAA Division II student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically. In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 78.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2.

Ashman earns honorable mention All-CCAA honors following a junior season in which he posted three top-25 results to go along with a pair of top 10s while averaging 74.54 strokes per round. He saved his best for the last, averaging just 73 strokes over his final 15 rounds while leading the Wildcats into the NCAA Championship Super Regional. The product of Buchanan High School in Clovis shot par or better at least once in each of the Wildcats' final five events.

Ashman joins teammate Dakota Ochoa in earning U.S. Open alternate status this season thanks to a 6-under-par 66 opening round, followed by a 3-under par second round on Monday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. Ashman, Ochoa, and the Wildcats are scheduled to open their 2022-23 season Sept. 26-27 at the Western Washington University Viking Invitational at Bellingham Country Club in Bellingham, Washington.
