14 shots out of 4th place heading into final day of West/South Central Regional

PUEBLO, Colorado—The Chico State men's golf team stayed put on moving day, meaning that the Wildcats will have to pack their best golf of the season into the final round of Saturday's NCAA Championship West/South Central Regional to keep their season moving. Chico State actually dropped one spot into 16th place with an even par 284 on the par-71, 6,522-yard Pueblo Country Club track Friday.

The top four teams and top two individuals not part of an advancing team when the tournament is finished will advance to the NCAA Championship Finals at TPC Michigan in Detroit. Midwestern State shot 13-under par Friday to move to -11 and take a one-shot lead over Colorado Mesa, which shot 8-under to move to -10. Colorado State-Pueblo also shot 8-under par Friday to move to -7. St. Mary's (Texas), at 2-under par, holds a one-shot advantage on the all-important No. 4 spot ahead of Stanislaus State, Cal State San Marcos, and Oklahoma Christian.

Michael Stephens bounced back from a brutal opening round with a second-round 67 Friday, leading the Wildcats. Tyler Ashman also played well, shooting a 70. But Travis Miller's 73 and 74s from Chris Colla and Dakota Ochoa did not move the needle.

Colla and Ashman are tied for 49th in the 108-player field at 3-over par. Ochoa and Stephens are tied for 58h at +4. And Miller is tied for 88th at +9.

With an early tee time of 7:20 a.m., Pacific, the Wildcats will have a chance to apply some pressure to the leaders. They'll be paired with conference foe Cal State East Bay and a group of individual qualifiers. Fans can follow their progress here via the live leaderboard.
