Four ’Cats Featured on All-CCAA Squad Ahead of Semis

| By:

Fontanelli a Second-Team selection; Albarran, Fritz, and Rice honorable mention

The announcement of the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association teams came Wednesday while the Chico State men's soccer team traveled by bus to Cal State San Bernardino for the CCAA Tournament semifinals. The Wildcats are on a mission to claim the conference title this weekend and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament that goes with it.

The recognition of their efforts by the conference's coaches, who vote to decide who receives All-CCAA honors, is nice. That was the case for midfielder Adrian Fontanelli, defender Trevor Fritz, forward Miles Rice, and goalkeeper Luis Albarran. Fontanelli earned Second Team All-CCAA honors, while Albarran, Fritz, and Rice received honorable mention.

Those four, and perhaps some teammates who feel snubbed by their lack of selection, will help lead the Wildcats into their biggest match in years Friday at 2 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Premier Field on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino. The winner will advance to the CCAA Tournament title match set for Sunday at 1 p.m. to face either Cal State LA or Sonoma State.

Every Conference Tournament match will be broadcast on the CCAA Network. Links to the broadcast, as well as ticketing and live stats, are available at www.ChicoWildcats.com in the calendar section on the homepage and on the men's soccer schedule page. Access to the video stream does require a subscription fee granting users access to every event on the CCAA Network, home and away.

The Wildcats went on the road and beat Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday to improve to 7-4-8 and advance to the semifinals. One of those school-record eight ties came against Cal State Dominguez Hills on October 21 at University Soccer Stadium in Chico. The Toros are the conference's regular-season champions, ranked No. 3 in the nation, and unbeaten at 13-0-5.

Fontanelli was a force in the center of the pitch all season for the Wildcats, earning All-CCAA accolades for the first time after transferring from Santa Rosa JC, where he was an All-American. The junior scored four goals and dished out an assist.

Albarran and Fritz helped anchor for the CCAA's third-stingiest defense. Albarran led the CCAA in shutouts (eight) and saves percentage (.822) to earn honorable mention honors for the second consecutive season. The senior from San Luis Obispo ranks sixth in school history with 13 career shutouts. Fritz, meanwhile, started 18 matches in front of him, posting the third most minutes of action on the team. The sophomore from Folsom registered an assist while helping limit opponents to 10 shots and four shots on goal per match.

Rice led the Chico State offense with six shots, 48 shots, and 24 shots on goal. The sophomore from Cameron Park also provided an assist.
