Wildcats Battle Through Rain, Late Drama in 2-2 Draw with Warriors

CHICO, Calif. — The Chico State men's soccer team played Stanislaus State to a 2-2 tie on a rainy Thursday night at University Soccer Stadium to finish the home schedule.

Cooper Stephens scored in the fourth minute, Stan State scored in the 84th and 86th minutes, and Carter Haynes converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute to even the match in the steady rain.

Chico State (3-10-4, 0-7-4 CCAA) went in front against Stanislaus State (3-6-7, 1-4-5 CCAA) when Braedyn Brown carried down the right side and crossed to Stephens at the left post, where Stephens finished for a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats continued to create chances from the sixth through 10th minutes, taking five shots in that stretch, including two Simon Vaca-Lorenzi attempts that Dylan Isasi saved, while the Warriors also got shots from Jose Ponce and Alexis Cervantes.

The middle of the first half included fouls from both teams and a yellow card to Gage Harrison in the 12th minute before Stan State earned a corner in the 33rd minute and Eric Reis sent a shot left in the 33rd minute. Chico State generated late looks from Xavier Elder and Haynes and added a corner in the 43rd minute, then reached halftime with a 1-0 lead.

With the Wildcats ahead 1-0, Stan State pressed early in the second half with five shots and three corner kicks from the 47th through 55th minutes, including a Nickolas Molina save on Federico Barbieri and a Gerardo Flores shot recorded as a team save. Vaca-Lorenzi's penalty kick in the 68th minute was saved by Isasi, and the Warriors later created another attacking sequence when Kenneth Solares hit the right woodwork and Colin Davis had an effort recorded as a team save in the 74th minute.

Flores converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute, and Alfredo Figueroa scored off Michael Daley's assist in the 86th minute to put Stan State ahead 2-1. Haynes tied the match for Chico State on a penalty kick in the 87th minute, and after each side took a late corner kick, the match ended 2-2.

Stephens scored on his lone shot and finished with two points. He has scored in two consecutive games. Haynes put one of his two attempts on goal. It was Haynes' first goal of the season and his first converted penalty kick of the season. Vaca-Lorenzi led the Wildcats with five shots, all on goal. Brown recorded his first assist of the season. The Wildcats recorded at least 14 shots for the second consecutive match and had a season-high nine shots on goal.

The Wildcats will close the book on the 2026 season at Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday at 2 p.m.
