Wildcats Lose Finale; Host Humboldt Sunday in CCAA Tournament Opener

Rubber match of series takes place three days prior to airing of “The Rivalries” episode featuring Chico Staten and Cal Poly Humboldt Soccer

Word came Thursday morning that the Chico State-Cal Poly Humboldt episode of the LG docu-series "The Rivalries" will premiere on Wednesday night at 5 p.m., Pacific, on LG Smart TVs. Early Thursday afternoon, the Lumberjacks made sure to add to the intrigue with a 1-0 victory against the Wildcats at College Creek Field. That result, in the final regular-season match for both teams, not only vaulted Cal Poly Humboldt into the playoffs, but also set up a rubber match between the teams in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at University Soccer Stadium in Chico.

In the hunt for the conference title up to the final day of the regular season, the Wildcats (8-4-5 overall) instead finished in fourth place with a conference record of 5-3-3 and 18 points. Cal Poly Humboldt went 4-1-4 over its final nine matches to climb from the depths of the conference standings to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place with Cal State San Marcos and Cal Poly Pomona. The Lumberjacks earned the No. 5 seed via tiebreakers (thanks to its head-to-head performance against those programs). Cal Poly Pomona is the No. 6 seed and will travel to face Cal State LA Sunday. CCAA co-champions Sonoma State and Stanislaus State earned first round byes into the conference tournament semifinals where they await Sunday's winners.

Chico State beat Cal Poly Humboldt 1-0 on September 17, in Chico. The production crew was in town that week to film what will be Episode 4 of "The Rivalries" docu-series Presented by LG USA in partnership with the NCAA. The Rivalries is available exclusively on the NCAA Championships Channel (Channel 100) via LG Channels, a free streaming service available exclusively on LG Smart TVs. Following Wednesday's 5 p.m. premiere, the episode will be re-aired at 8 p.m. and again at 11 p.m.

That night, the Wildcats posted a 10th-minute goal and never looked back in winning 1-0. They out-shot the Lumberjacks 11-6 and earned a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The episode is titled "Battle for the North," and the Wildcats went as far north as they go for a conference match Thursday in Arcata, but they did not raise their level of play to their expectations. Needing a win to have any hope for a postseason berth, the Lumberjacks out-shot Chico State 8-5 and earned an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Megan Janikowski poked home the match winner from just outside the right post on one of those corner kicks in the 65th minute. With the win, Cal Poly Humboldt became the lone CCAA side to go unbeaten at home this season at 6-0-3.

Chico State goalkeeper Emma Hofmann made four saves in the defeat, but the team's stretch of three consecutive shutouts came to an end.

Tickets for Sunday's match are $10 for general admission, $6 for seniors and visiting students with ID, and $4 for Chico State students and children ages 3-12. The match will be broadcast on the CCAA Network and live stats are also available.
