Colby Orr scored a career high 19 points in the final 16 minutes as the Chico State men's basketball team came from behind to beat Stanislaus State 61-55 and score a school record for wins to start a season Sunday afternoon in Acker Gym. The 10-0 Wildcats (6-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action) faced their largest deficit of the season at 35-26 with before Orr led the charge from behind, knocking down 7-of-10 shots, including 4-of-5 threes.
Â
Prior to Sunday, the 1942-43 Wildcats had been the lone team in program history to start 10-0. The win also marked Chico State's school-record-breaking 11
th straight regular-season CCAA victory. Â
Â
Three of those wins have come against Stanislaus State, including a 71-44 drubbing in November in Turlock. The Warriors (4-7, 1-5 CCAA) punched back Sunday, slowing the Wildcats' offense that was red hot at the close of 2021. Orr sped it back up. Malik Duffy finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds on his birthday. Isaiah Brooks chipped in 13 points. And Kelvin Wright Jr. patrolled the paint with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Â
The Wildcats entered the game one of five unbeaten teams in NCAA Division II and ranked No. 4 in the nation by D2SIDA and No. 5 by the NABC—both the highest they have ever climbed in those respective polls. Their average margin of victory in the previous five conference wins was 18.6.
Â
But nothing came easy Sunday. They missed 22 of 31 first-half shots and stayed in the game thanks to another strong defensive effort. Chico State trailed by nine with under 16 minutes to play when Orr buried threes on three consecutive possessions. The Wildcats were not quite over the hump, however, and it wasn't until less than three minutes remained that they took the lead for good. This time Orr drew the defense and found Brooks for the go-ahead triple that made it 58-55. Orr made 1-of-2 free throws to stretch the lead to four with 31 seconds to play, and then Wright Jr. blocked a shot, corralled it, and while falling out of bounds found Orr for a breakout layup that sealed the victory.
The Wildcats will hit the road later this week, facing Cal State East Bay Thursday night at 7:30 and Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon at 3. Dominguez Hills recently announced that no fans will be allowed in the facility for Saturday's matchup. Â
