Wildcats grateful for NCAA Championship opportunity

One of three teams making 23rd consecutive appearance

SAINT LEO, Florida—When the 348 competitors toe the starting line at the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country Championships on The Abbey Golf Course early Saturday morning in Saint Leo, Florida, they will be doing so with gratitude. The event was cancelled last year, making every runner wonder if they should keep chasing their collegiate cross country dreams.

Runners like Chico State's Matthew Herrera, who told Landon Negri in a wonderful article for DyeStat that can be read by CLICKING HERE: "For so long, during the midst of the pandemic, I thought this day would never come. So really, (I'm) just going into this race with a ton of gratitude that I was granted a season and stayed healthy over the course of the pandemic."

Some members of the team—like Herrera—would have exhausted their athletic eligibility in 2020–21, but chose to stick around for another year to compete. Others, like redshirt freshmen Brayden McLaughlin and Charlie Giannini had to wait until their third years at Chico State to run in a Chico State cross country uniform. Some chose to attend graduate school and continue competing, while others lost one or two full seasons of competition. Rory Abberton, for instance, was a redshirt freshman when he competed for the Wildcats at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Now on the doorstep of graduating, he plans on this season (his second in uniform) being has last. And those are just some of the team's stories.

The Wildcats hope to give all of their stories a happy ending Saturday. The race will start at 6:45 a.m., Pacific time. Links to streaming video, live results and more are available on the cross country schedule page and calendar section of the homepage. Making its nation-leading 23rd consecutive NCAA Championship Final appearance, Chico State is running for its 10th podium finish (top four) and 23rd top-10 placing.

Chico State is one of three programs making its 23rd straight championships appearance, joining Adams State and Western Colorado. Only Chico State and Adams State can claim top-15 NCAA Championships finishes every season since 1999.

The Wildcats have also finished among the top four eight times in the past 17 years, including a third-place finish at the 2019 Championships. That finish tied for the highest in the history of the program. The Wildcats also finished third in 1969, 2005, 2008 and 2019, and also finished on the podium in fourth place in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2011 and 2016.

Herrera, Abberton and Jack Emanuel are the only holdovers from the 2019 NCAA Championships roster. Emanuel, who finished 30th to earn All-America recognition, has a chance to become the 13th athlete in the program's history to earn a second All-America honor.
