Three Chico State pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, quelling the California Collegiate Athletic Association's hottest offense and securing a split of Saturday's twinbill at Nettleton Stadium. The Gators, who won the first game 7-2 and entered the second game hitting a CCAA-best .356, managed only three singles against Chico State starter Christian Stiegele (1-1) in the Wildcats' 1-0 win.
Daniel Foret came on with the potential tying run on second with one down in the fifth and got a foul pop-out and strikeout to escape the jam. He retired the Gators in order in the sixth. Kristian Scott pitched the seventh, working around a two-out hit by pitch and walk, to earn his first save as a Wildcat. Scott threatened to load the bases facing a three-ball count with those two runners on, but climbed the ladder, getting a called third strike to end it.
The Wildcats got the games lone run in the second inning. Adam Muñoz drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Eddie Zavala's sacrifice bunt. Jorge Perez came through with the big two-out hit, lacing an RBI single up the middle.
Zavala went 2-for-2 with a double and the crucial sacrifice bunt as the Wildcats improved to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. San Francisco State slipped to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA.
San Francisco State snapped Chico State's five-game winning streak with a 15-hit attack in the opener. The Gators scored two in the second and two more in the fourth to take control.
Willie Lajoie's RBI-single in the sixth gave the 'Cats some life and extending his hitting streak to eight games. But San Francisco State answered with a three-run seventh.
The Wildcats final run of the game came when Muñoz scored all the way from second base when Tyler Stofiel reached on a throwing error.
Turner Olson paced the Chico State offense with a pair of hits. Lajoie walked twice to stretch his reached-base streak to nine games but grounded out in his only at-bat and saw his eight-game hitting streak snapped. Muñoz also walked twice.
The series concludes with a single fame Sunday morning at 11.
