Change does Wildcats good

Women’s soccer team wins second match of season-opening road trip

DENVER—Kim Sutton did not become one of the winningest coaches in the history of Division II women's soccer by sitting back on her heels. Sensing her team needed an offensive spark following Friday's season-opening loss at 15th-ranked Colorado School of Mines, Chico State's head coach made a change, moving All-West Region defender Abbie Jones into the midfield for Sunday's match at Regis University. Jones and the Wildcats cashed in.

Jones slotted home Jordan Doukakis' service into the lower-right side of the net in the 15th minute, Susanna Garcia drew and converted a penalty kick a little over four minutes later, and the Wildcats held on for their first win of the season, beating Regis 2-1 at Regis Match Pitch in Denver.

The Wildcats out-shot Regis 15-11 and enjoyed advantages of 7-3 in shots on goal and 5-2 in corner kicks while improving to 1-1. Regis, which played to a 1-1 draw against San Francisco State in its season-opener Friday, fell to 0-1-1. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's coaches picked the Rangers to finish fifth in the conference this season.
Chico State Women's Soccer Player Susanna Garcia
Susanna Garcia, shown here in action last season, drew and converted a PK for
Chico State's second goal of the first half.

Doukakis' assist was the ninth of the junior's career. She's the team's active career leader in assists, having delivered four as a freshman and four more last season as a sophomore. Jones' goal was the fourth of her career in 16 career shot attempts.

Garcia drew the foul that led to her PK, attacking up the left side of the pitch and into the box where a defender stepped in a took her to the turn. The keeper guessed correctly and got a glove on Garcia's blast, but the ball was hit with enough force that it continued on into the upper-V.

The goal was Garcia's first of the year. The 2018 California Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year scored six last season.

Regis cut the lead in half in the 37th minute, but the Wildcats limited their hosts to just one second-half shot on goal. That was saved by Chico State sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Graham, who made two saves on the afternoon in improving to 3-1-1 as a starter.

The Wildcats will play their 2019 home opener Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Dominican, prior to the men's match against Concordia (Ore.).
