Johnson and Gill team up twice late in 2-0 victory

Sutton matches Russ for most wins in school history with 186

FRESNO—Just when it seemed the Chico State women's soccer team may have used all of its finishing power in a four-goal deluge against Holy Names last Saturday, Cody Johnson and Mackenzie Gill teamed up to unearth it once again in a 2-0 victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday at Ramirez Field in Fresno.

Less than 48 hours after a scoreless home draw against Azusa Pacific, the 24th-ranked Wildcats once again found themselves without a goal and heading toward overtime. Gill and Johnson teamed up twice in the span of 1:51, in the 81st and 83rd minute, to lift Chico State to victory in its final non-conference match of the season.

The victory marked the 186th of Chico State head coach Kim Sutton's career, tying her with the only other coach in the program's history, Bob Russ, for the most wins in program history. Sutton, who spent her first six seasons as a head coach at Humboldt State, is now 186-118-58 at the Wildcats' helm and 241-160-72 as a Division II head coach. The 12th-longest tenured Division II coach in the nation, Sutton entered the season ranked 32nd in victories at the Division II level.

Cody Johnson, shown here in a match from earlier this season, notched a goal and assist in the Wildcats' win.

She's done some of her best work over the past five-plus seasons, during which the Wildcats are a combined 57-26-15.

It appears that some of her best recruiting has taken place over the past two seasons. The 2019 Wildcats feature 27 freshmen and sophomores on the 33-player roster and they've performed as well as any young group Sutton has coached.

Four freshmen and three sophomores—including Johnson—started Saturday, while three freshmen—including Gill—and four sophomores came off the bench.

Due to their heavy legs after playing an up-and-down 110-minute marathon against Azusa Pacific Friday night, Sutton called upon the team's depth, playing 19 different Wildcats.

That paid off late in the match, beginning with Gill's first collegiate goal. Johnson took a throw-in on an angled run toward the end line and got her toes around the ball just before it went out of bounds inside the six-yard box. Gill was in great position to receive the angled pass a step inside the six-yard box and jammed it home for a 1-0 lead.

True freshman Emilie Peraza, making her Chico State debut Saturday off the bench, played a key role in making it 2-0. Pressing the defense, she forced a turnover deep in Fresno Pacific's end. Gill picked it off and played a pass through two Sundbirds defenders to Johnson, who took a touch before chipping the ball over the keeper and inside the far post.

The assist was Gill's first of the season and the goal was Johnson's second.

Another true freshman, Eve Miller, got the start in goal and made three saves on the way to her first collegiate win and shutout.

The Wildcats will head into California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a record of 4-1-1. They begin CCAA play with a road trip to Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA next weekend and then travel to Humboldt State and San Francisco State before returning home to play five of their last eight conference matches at University Soccer Stadium.
