On the bubble for a berth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament since the very beginning of its conference campaign, the Chico State baseball team enters the final weekend of the regular season one win away from securing a spot thanks to last weekend's exciting four-game sweep of rival Sonoma State.
Chico State, 25-18 overall and 21-17 in the CCAA, will play makeup doubleheaders at San Francisco State Friday at noon and Stanislaus State Saturday at 1 p.m. A single Wildcats win or Cal State East Bay loss during its four-game home series against UC San Diego, which gets under way Thursday, would guarantee Chico State a spot in the conference tournament.
However, the Wildcats are hoping to accomplish more than that. Currently in fifth place in the CCAA standings, the Wildcats could rise as high as third with a strong weekend on the road, where they are 12-6 this season.
Stanislaus State, 29-19 is third in the conference standings at 25-17 and has already locked up a spot in the conference tournament. The Wildcats could catch the Warriors by winning all four games this weekend, or by splitting at San Francisco State and sweeping Stanislaus State.
San Francisco State, 22-15-1, is in fourth place in the CCAA with a conference record of 20-15. After playing Chico State, the Gators will play three games against Sonoma State Saturday, first completing a suspended game in which they trail 14-5 in the eighth inning, and then playing a doubleheader. The Wildcats would catch the Gators with any combination of Chico State wins and San Francisco State losses adding up to six. A four-win weekend would accomplish that for the Wildcats, as would a sweep of the Gators, a split against Stanislaus State, and one San Francisco State loss to Sonoma State, among other combinations.
The Wildcats enter the weekend riding a wave of positive momentum after coming from behind to beat Sonoma State in the first three games of last weekend's series at The Nett and then posting their second straight walk-off win in Sunday's series finale for the sweep. They are also motivated by revenge this weekend. Doubleheader sweeps at the hands of Stanislaus State and San Francisco State sparked their six-game losing skid to begin conference play. That put the Wildcats in chase mode for a tournament berth right off the bat.
They are 21-11 in conference play since that six-game skid, however, and one win away from advancing to the postseason for the 22
nd time in the past 24 seasons.
