The lyrics of the Simple Minds song: "Rain keeps falling. Rain keeps falling down, down, down, down" keep coming to mind. Perhaps it's the fact that throughout California, home of every team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the rain, well, keeps falling. But brief interludes of sunshine and blue sky and the Wildcats' promising doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay Monday at Nettleton Stadium, are making it hard to forget about the Chico State baseball team.
The Wildcats have yet to play a single game as originally scheduled in 2019. Many games, as is the case with this weekend's four-game series at Cal State East Bay, have been postponed more than once. Rain in Hayward Saturday forced the postponement of the series opener, which had already been pushed back from Friday, by another day. Chico State and Cal State East Bay are now scheduled to play a pair Sunday beginning at noon, and another doubleheader Monday at 11 a.m.
Sunday's games will be broadcast locally on 1290 AM and 102.9 FM KPAY. Links to streaming audio and live stats for all four games are available at

Chico State is 6-7 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA. But the Wildcats are hoping that Monday momentum carries over. The Wildcats played flawless defense, got strong pitching—especially from starters Grant Larson (a 1-hit shutout) and Dalton Smith (six shutout innings in his first collegiate start)—and timely hitting, highlighted by Kyle Pineda's late-inning heroics.
Cal State East Bay is 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the CCAA. The Pioneers went 1-2 against Menlo College and 2-1 against Holy Names in non-conference play, dropped three of four at Cal State San Marcos, swept a four-game home series against Cal State San Bernardino, and lost three of four at Stanislaus State last weekend.
