Game Recap: Baseball | | Luke Reid - Sports Information Director (lreid@csuchico.edu)

Two late rallies come up just short as ’Cats drop a pair

Miller slashes six hits in the doubleheader

The series did not happen how and where it was scheduled to. The games did not go according to plan for the Chico State baseball team either.

A four-game series at San Francisco State was originally on the docket for this weekend. But after two days of postponed games, the teams agreed to move the series to Chico for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Nettleton Stadium.

Playing as the visiting team in their home park, the Wildcats dropped a pair of tight affairs, losing the first game 5-4 and the second 10-9.

The Wildcats are now 4-5 overall and 0-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State improved to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the CCAA.

Dustin Miller went 6-for-8 Sunday, raising his batting average to a
team-high .435.

Chico State led early in each game, fell behind, and then attempted to rally late, falling just short each time.

Dustin Miller cracked six hits and drove in three runs, while Eddie Zavala and Alex Devito delivered four apiece in the double-dip. But the Wildcats' pitching staff walked 13 and hit three more, which proved to be too many free baserunners to overcome.

Miller's eighth-inning RBI single in the opener—his third hit of the game—drew the Wildcats to within a run, but while trying to tie or take the lead in the ninth, the Wildcats had a runner picked off first base and another caught stealing to end the game.

Chico State's offense gave it a spark in the nightcap, plating four runs in the first and scoring twice in the second. But the Wildcats could not keep the Gators off the scoreboard. San Francisco State scored two in the first, two in the second, took the lead with a four-run fourth, and tacked on two more runs in the fifth to build a 10-6 lead.

The Wildcats rallied in the sixth inning of the seven-inning game. RBI-singles by DeVito and Miller trimmed the lead to one, but that was all the scoring they could generate.

Chico State is back in action next weekend at home against Cal State Monterey Bay. The series is scheduled to start Friday with a single game at 2 p.m.
