A very young Chico State women's soccer team capped its season with a 1-1 draw against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at University Soccer Stadium. But not before paying homage to legendary head coach Kim Sutton and its two beloved seniors, Aiden Williams and Abbie Jones.
Â
Sutton was presented with a beautiful crystal trophy by University President Gayle Hutchinson and Director of Athletics Anita Barker before the match, honoring her program-record-breaking 187
th career victory as Chico State's head coach earlier this season. Williams and Jones were celebrated by their teammates, coaches, Barker and Hutchinson, and the team's fans. The pair helped lead Chico State to back-to-back NCAA Championship Tournament berths in 2017 and 2018.
Â
It looked as though the Wildcats would close out an up-and-down campaign with a victory. Camille Lidster's 16
th-minute strike put them in the lead until the visiting honors netted the equalizer with just three seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
Lidster ran onto a failed clearance 30 yards from goal and took four dribbles to her right before unleashing a beautiful right-footed strike into the far-side netting from 25 yards out. The goal was the true freshman team-leading fifth of the season and third of the past three games.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Eve Miller, making her third start of the season, made four saves for the Wildcats in improving to 1-0-1.
Â
Led by Jones' six shots, all on goal, the Wildcats out-shot Cal State Monterey Bay 30-10. She and Williams both played some of the best soccer of their careers Saturday.
Â
Chico State finished its campaign with a record of 8-8-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay finished 8-8-2 and 3-8-1.
