SAN FRANCISCO—Calvin Geraci scored a career-high 22 points and Justin Briggs chipped in 14 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots as the Chico State men's basketball team won its second game in a row, beating Academy of Art 68-63 at historic Kezar Pavilion Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco.
Geraci, whose previous career best was 14 points, buried 8-of-11 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The product of San Marin High School in Novato had a number of fans who made the short trip to the city in the stands.
Kevin Warren finished with 11 points and Isaiah Brooks had 10 as the Wildcats improved to 4-2. Warren also led the Wildcats with a +/- of +12.
Before Wednesday, Chico State had not won or lost two in a row since beginning the campaign with a split at the Seattle Pacific Sodexo Classic.
The Wildcats will look to make it three wins in a row when they return home Saturday to face Dominican University of California at 4 p.m.
Academy of Art, which has opened the season with six straight games against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents, dipped to 2-4.
Chico State committed only eight turnovers while forcing 16, resulting in a 22-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Academy of the Art led by as many as six early on, but Chico State took the lead for good on a Brooks triple with 6:01 remaining in the first half. That bucket sparked a 9-0 run during which Geraci hit a pair of free throws and turned a steal into a score.
The Wildcats' six-point halftime lead ballooned to 48-37 before the Urban Knights closed the gap back to five. The lead grew back to 10 when Warren buried a big 3-pointer with 3:18 remaining. Joshua Hamilton grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Warren at the top of the arc to set things up.
A Geraci jumper made it a 12-point lead with 2:22 left and the Wildcats withstood a late Academy of Art run to win it.
