’Cats deadly from distance, drill Dominican 94-58

Chico State starters sink 14-of-17 from 3-point land

The Chico State men's basketball program has made a lot of history under Head Coach Greg Clink, now in his 12th season at the helm, winning two NCAA Championship Tournament West Region titles and three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) crowns along the way. But none of Clink's Chico State's teams has ever shot the 3-pointer at a better clip than the Wildcats did Saturday night. Chico State knocked down 15-of-22 shots from beyond the arc (68.2 percent) on the way to a 94-58 win against Dominican University of California.

That's the highest 3-point percentage by a Chico State team since February 8, 2003, when it made 13-of-19 on the way to an 87-66 win against San Francisco State.

Malik Duffy drained 5-of-7 threes and 11-of-15 shots on the way to a career-high 30 points. Calvin Geraci (15 points) and Kevin Warren (11) made all three of their 3-point attempts, and Isaiah Brooks buried 3-of-4 on his way to 11 points. Chico State's starters combined to shoot an incredible 14-of-17 from 3-point land and missed only 12 of 41 shots.

Duffy is the eighth Wildcat to reach 30 points in the Clink era and the first since Jalen McFerren dropped 30 on Cal State San Bernardino on February 27, 2018.

Winners of three in a row, the Wildcats improved to 5-2 on the season. Dominican dropped to 0-6, but absorbed just its second loss of the season by double digits.

The Wildcats shot 62.7 percent from the field and outrebounded Dominican 38-14, allowing only one offensive rebound all night and outscoring the Penguins 19-3 in second-chance points. Duffy led the 'Cats with eight rebounds and Kelvin Wright Jr. pulled down a career-best seven in just nine minutes of action. Spencer LaShells also had an impressive night off the bench, logging five rebounds, two steals, two points, a blocked shot, and a team-best +/-of +23 in his 14 minutes.

Chico State's ball movement was nearly as impressive as its shooting. The Wildcats recorded an assist on 24 of their 37 makes. Brooks led the way with five dimes. Geraci, Warren, and Joshua Hamilton had four apiece.

Duffy, who finished the first half with 17 points and seven rebounds, drilled a 3-pointer right before the half that sent the Wildcats to the break up 15. That make and started a streak of nine straight for the Wildcats.

Back-to-back Brooks triples pushed the lead to 20 early in the second stanza before consecutive buckets by Geraci grew the lead to 25.

Warren scored the Wildcats' next 11 points before setting up Duffy for a 3-pointer that gave Chico State a 33-15 run to start the second half and a 74-41 lead with 9:13 to play. Chico State's lead hovered between 27 and 36 from that point forward.

The Wildcats hope to stay hot with two of its toughest opponents of the season on deck. They'll be at preseason CCAA championship favorite UC San Diego at 8 p.m. Thursday before returning home to take on the team picked by the conference's coaches to finish second, Cal Poly Pomona, Saturday at 7:30.
