POMONA—How long has it been since the Chico State women's soccer team put together a streak like this? Outside of the coaching staff, none of these Wildcats were alive to see it.
Chico State tied the school record for consecutive matches without a loss—set in 1992—with a 3-2 victory at Cal Poly Pomona Sunday, marking its 10th straight match without a loss. Erin Woods' go-ahead 86th-minute strike sealed the deal.
The Wildcats, now 6-0-4 overall and 5-0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) following their fifth straight win, also matched the 2007 team's school with their seventh straight victory on an opponents' home pitch. The program's longest stretch of unbeaten soccer on the opponents' pitch is nine, set in 1985. And the record for consecutive victories is eight, set in 2005.
Sarah Emigh scored her first goal of the season,
extending the lead to 2-0.
Sunday's victory was unlike any the Wildcats have earned this season. It was a shootout.
This was the first time Chico State had allowed multiple goals in a match. The Wildcats had surrendered only four through their first nine matches. It also showcased another step in their offensive evolution. They've now scored two or more goals in each of their last three wins.
A team built on defense early this season, Chico State has become explosive on the offensive end. In doing so, the Wildcats have risen to the top of the CCAA table.
It appeared as though the Wildcats might have an easy time of it early in Sunday's match. Juliana Los and Sarah Emigh (pronounced A-me) scored just seven minutes apart to give them a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half. In doing so, they became the ninth and 10th different Wildcats to find the back of the net in the past three weeks.
Los' 24th-minute goal was an absolute stunner.
The defensive pressure of Devon Morones helped set things on motion. She put the Broncos on their heels as they passed the ball backward down the Wildcats' right flank. Eventually, they passed it back to the keeper. With Morones bearing down on her, the goalkeeper did not have time to find an open teammate and instead booted the ball to Jordan Doukakis on the left flank. Doukakis trapped the ball and then quickly slipped a pass into the open space in the middle of the pitch where Los was headed, hand in the air and calling for the ball.
She apparently had a plan.
Los took one touch, and from 30 yards out from the goal in middle of the pitch, the New Zealander unleashed a right-footed blast with pinpoint accuracy into the left upper-V.
Erin Woods scored her seventh career
match winner Sunday.
Los also played a role in the Wildcats' second goal, drawing a foul just inside the midfield stripe halfway between the middle of the pitch and the right sideline.
Abbie Jones took the free kick and dropped it just inside the 18-yard box. Emigh was making a run from left edge of the 18-yard box toward the PK spot, and as the ball was still in its upward trajectory off the bounce, timed her leap exquisitely. She flicked it with her head over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the open net with 13:55 remaining in the opening half.
But the match was far from decided.
Cal Poly Pomona (4-5-1, 0-3-1 CCAA) cut the lead in half exactly two minutes later. Ally LaCarra-Platt hit a rocket from 20 yards headed toward the far post. But hallway there, it ricocheted off a Wildcats defender and looped inside the near post.
The Broncos leveled things in the 57th minute when an attempted clearance from the top-right corner of the 18-yard box deflected off a Bronco and Samantha Putnam, running over the top of the play, touched it once before hitting a beauty into the upper-V inside the far post.
Thanks in part to the play of Chico State goalkeeper Brenna Meier, who made four of her eight saves over the next 20 minutes, the match remained tied as the clock ticked down toward the end of regulation. But the Wildcats earned one last good chance, and took full advantage.
Emigh drew a foul from behind as she dribbled 35 yards out from goal in the middle of the pitch. With Korie Bozart standing over the free kick, the Broncos defense pressed high, spread wide above the 18-yard box.
Korie Bozart's clever set piece set up the
Wildcats' match-winning goal.
So instead of running one of the team's traditional set pieces, Bozart audibled, rolling a ball through an open space between defenders. Woods, spaced out to Bozart's right, timed her run perfectly, leaving all defenders behind and meeting the ball at the PK spot just before the keeper arrived. With a slide and flick of her right boot, Woods punched the ball over the keeper's left shoulder and into the back of the net for the match winner.
The goal was Woods' team-leading fourth of the campaign and her second match winner. Of her 15 career goals, seven have given Chico State the win.
Bozart and Doukakis are now tied for the team lead in assists with three apiece.
The Wildcats will take next week off before beginning a stretch in which they'll play four of their final six regular-season matches at home. They'll attempt to break the school record for consecutive matches without a loss on Friday, Oct. 12, against rival Sonoma State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
