They come in overwhelming waves. Just when it appears there's time to take a deep breath, another wave crashes.
Â
Chico State men's basketball coach Greg Clink's recruiting classes, featuring student-athletes committed to the culture, winning, and graduating, has turned the Wildcats into a West Coast basketball powerhouse. Three California Collegiate Athletic Association titles, six NCAA Tournament berths, two NCAA Tournament West Region titles, and 159 wins over the past seven seasons prove it.
Â
The next wave of Wildcats is here and there's a lot for Chico State fans to be excited about.
Â
"This class has the potential to be among the best we've had," Clink said. "All four of these guys have the potential to be outstanding players. They are high-character people who want to be part of a winner. That is why we chose them and that is why they chose Chico State."
Â
There's Matt McAndrews, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Foothill Community College who earned California Community College Athletic Association All-State honors last season.
Â
There's Joshua Hamilton, a 6-foot-2 guard from Central Catholic High School who earned Cal-Hi Sports Division III All-State honors.
Â
There's Amari Stroud, a 6-foot-9 forward from Fresno's Sunnyside High School who earned Cal-Hi Sports Division II All-State honors.
Â
And there's Kelvin Wright, Jr., a 6-foot-6 forward from Rancho Cucamonga High School who averaged a double-double in one of the toughest leagues in the state.
Â
"Kelvin is a big strong post player with great footwork and a knack for scoring inside," Clink said. "He is a great student and we are excited that he is joining the Wildcat family."
Â
Wright was a two-time All-Baseline League selection and Second Team All-Inland Empire as a senior. He averaged 11.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game while helping lead the Cougars to a 20-10 record and the second round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
Â
Stroud was named the North Yosemite League's MVP this season after averaging 19.4 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocked shots per game. He helped Sunnyside run the table on the way to the NYL title and the CIF Central Section Division I semifinals.
Â
"Amari is going to bring a lot of excitement to Acker Gym in the next few years," Clink said. "He is a 6-9 athlete who can play multiple positions and is a threat inside and outside. We are excited that he has chosen to be a Wildcat."
Â
Hamilton graduated from Central Catholic High School in Modesto as the program's all-time leader in scoring and assists. He averaged 21.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game as a senior.
Â
"Josh is an outstanding student and a terrific basketball player," Clink said. "He is quick, strong, and athletic and shoots the ball at a high level. He has the potential to be one of the next great guards at Chico State."
Â
Hamilton led the Raiders to a 31-3 record, their third consecutive section title, and the Division III Northern California State Championship Regional Final. He was named the MVP of the Valley Oak League.
Â
McAndrews was coached by former Chico State assistant Matt Stanley at Foothill after prepping at Archbishop Mitty.
Â
"Matt is a dynamic guard who can score and distribute the ball at a high level," Clink said. "He adds depth and athleticism to our backcourt and we are excited to have him in the family."
Â
McAndrews averaged 20.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and shot 53.7 percent from the field last season, earning First Team All-Conference and leading the conference in scoring. As a senior at Archbishop Mitty, McAndrews led the Monarchs to a 27-5 mark while earning First Team All-West Catholic Athletic League and Third Team San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro.
Â
Chico State returns nine players from last season's roster, including a pair of starters. The Wildcats will also be bolstered by the addition of redshirt sophomore Kevin Warren and redshirt freshmen Joshua Curls and Brennan Wheeler.
