Two years ago, the Chico State baseball team was the No. 6 seed in the six-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. The Wildcats came home with the championship banner. Last year, Chico State was the top seed. The Wildcats won it again. This season, Chico State is right in the middle of the pack as the No. 3 seed. They are hoping to make it three in a row.
The six-team double-elimination tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton (home of the Stockton Ports, the Single-A affiliate of the Oakland A's) starts Wednesday. The Wildcats will play the third game of the day, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., against Cal Poly Pomona.
Every Chico State baseball postseason game will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY. Beginning Thursday, the CCAA Tournament will also be broadcast on Eleven Sports USA (DirecTV channel 623 locally) and streamed live at baosntv.com.
Tickets are available for purchase here.
The CCAA Tournament Champion earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament. The remaining teams will have to wait until the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Selection Show Sunday night at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com to learn if they receive one of four at-large berths.
Chico State is making its 21
st postseason appearance in the last 23 years following its 22
nd 30-win season during that span. The Wildcats wrapped up the regular season with a record of 30-20 and finished in third place in the CCAA standings at 26-18.
The Wildcats split a tension-filled four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona April 27-29. They won the opener 5-1 behind Grant Larson's fabulous start and Alex DeVito's tiebreaking three-run homer. Kyle Blakeman's two-run blast gave them a 2-1 lead early in the second game, but the Broncos came back to win 6-3. In the third game, a seven-inning affair, Chico State's Casey Costello was one out away from a no-hitter and preserved the shutout for a 1-0 victory. Cal Poly Pomona took the entertaining finale 12-10 despite Blakeman's four-hit game.
The Broncos finished the regular season 28-22 and finished fourth in the CCAA with a record of 25-19.
The winner of Wednesday night's game will face the Cal State LA-UC San Diego winner Thursday at 7 p.m. The loser will take on the San Francisco State-Cal State Monterey Bay winner at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
The Wildcats have won seven of 11 postseason matchups against the Broncos, including three in a row at the CCAA Tournament and seven of nine overall. Last season, Chico State rallied for an 8-7 win in extra innings. RJ Hassey's two-run double tied the game in the eighth, and in the 10
th, he laid down a squeeze bunt that brought home the winning run.
