A double-digit run total is usually enough to win a college baseball game. That has especially been the case for the Chico State baseball team, which up until 10 days ago was 42-1 since the start of the 2013 season and 118-5 in the Dave Taylor Era when scoring 10 or more.
But the Wildcats lost a game in which they scored 10 runs for the second time in 10 days Monday. Cal State East Bay overcame a four-run deficit and then held off the hard-charging Wildcats for an 11-10 victory at Nettleton Stadium.
The Pioneers' two-run eighth inning proved to be the difference. Chico State tried to rally in the ninth. RJ Hassey singled leading off the inning, Turner Olson was hit by a pitch with one out, and Brian Pozos walked to load the bases. But Kyle Blakeman's sacrifice fly accounted for the only run the Wildcats could muster in the inning.
Chico State slipped to 14-10 overall and 10-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with its sixth loss in the past eight games. Cal State East Bay improved to 10-12 overall and 7-9 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats dipped into fifth place in the CCAA standings, but are just two games out of first entering next weekend's four-game home series against Cal State San Bernardino.
Alex DeVito is 19-for-37 with 13 RBIs in the Wildcats' last 10 games to
raise his average to .413, good for second in the CCAA.
Alex DeVito homered and drove in four runs to pace Chico State's offense, which carried the momentum from an 8-0 win in Sunday's second game into Monday. Louie Canjura went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Pozos went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Wildcats raced to a 4-0 lead, chasing Cal State East Bay starter Mark Woinarowicz before he could record an out. DeVito drove in a run, Canjura scored on a wild pitch, and Casey Henderson singled in a run to chase Woinarowicz. Pozos' grounder plated the fourth run of the inning.
Cal State East Bay got a run back in the second, but Chico State answered in the bottom half of the inning. Santos was hit by a pitch and stole second before Canjura singled him to third and DeVito singled down the left field line to bring him home, making it 5-1.
The Pioneers, who boast one of the most potent offense in the CCAA, were undeterred. They got three runs back in the third and another in the fourth to knot the score 5-5 and end the day for Wildcats starter William Curless.
Chico State reliever Anthony Baleto got the final out in the fourth and cruised through the fifth. But he ran into trouble in the sixth. Two straight bunt singles started things, and four batters later, Dallas Dey's two-run homer had pushed the Pioneers' lead to 9-5.
Now it was the Wildcats' turn to fight back.
They cut the deficit in half in the sixth, getting a two-out walk from Canjura before DeVito cranked a two-run homer over the left field wall.
They tied the game in the seventh. Henderson singled leading off the inning and scored on Olson's double. Olson advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on Pozos' single up the middle against a drawn-in infield.
Cal State East Bay took the lead for good in the eighth on a two-out, two-run single.
