It is quite a luxury for Chico State men's soccer head coach Felipe Restrepo to have Damion Lewis and Luke Dennison—two of the best to have ever played the position for the Wildcats—available at goalkeeper. It's an even greater luxury when the defense in front of them is so good that they are rarely tested.
That was the case Sunday in Chico State's dominant 2-0 victory against visiting UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference match at University Soccer Stadium.
Jeremiah Egujie and Samuel Licona scored first-half goals for the Wildcats, each of them set up beautifully. That was more than enough cushion for the defense, which allowed only six shots all afternoon.
Lewis played the first half, saving the only shot on goal he faced. The senior collected his 25th career victory in the process. He's the sixth Wildcat ever to reach that mark. Lewis ranks fourth in school history with 17 shutouts, and fifth in career goals-against average at 0.875.
Andrew Hazzard drew a foul to set up the Wildcats' second goal, though
it was not this particular foul.
Dennison worked the second half, turning away the only shot he faced. The senior lowered his career goals-against average to 0.817 in the process. That ranks second in school history behind only Tom Carter's 0.80.
Chico State improved to 7-3-1 with the win and will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next weekend at home. The Wildcats host rival Sonoma State Friday afternoon at 4:30 and Humboldt State Sunday morning at 11:30.
UC Santa Cruz slipped to 4-8-0.
These programs played for the first time exactly one year ago on Sunday. Chico State entered the match riding a six-match shutout streak. But UC Santa Cruz scored two first-half goals and held on to win 2-1 despite a dominant second-half by the Wildcats.
Chico State dominated from start to finish this time, finishing with a 19-6 edge in shots and 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
They got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute. Egujie won a clearance about 10 yards into the Banana Slugs' half and played a quick touch to Fabian Roman before starting his run. Roman one-timed the pass to Alex Fluitt on the right flank and Fluitt kept the quick attack going, heading the ball forward for Egujie in behind the defense at the top of the 18-yard box.
The goalkeeper attempted to beat him to the ball, but with one touch, Egujie was easily around him to his right and then slipped the ball into the back of the net with a right-footed shot from just outside the top-right corner of the six-yard box.
Samuel Licona scored his second goal of the season Sunday to give
the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Egujie's goal was his sixth of the season and the 16th of his two-year career. Fluitt's assist was his second in the last three matches and the seventh of his career. Roman's was his second of the season and the sixth of his career.
Chico State doubled its lead in the 41st minute. Andrew Hazzard drew a foul 30 yards out directly in front of the goal to set things up, and Eddie Zecena delivered a perfect free kick. Zecena chipped the ball over the defense and right to the PK spot. Garrett Hogbin, who was lined up on the top of the box to Zecena's left, looped around his defender and flicked the ball on toward the far post with his right boot. Licona, making his run from the left side of the box, tapped it in for his second goal of the season.
Hogbin's assist was his first of the season, while Zecena added to his team lead with his fourth.
