SAN FRANCISCO—The Chico State women's soccer team absorbed its first loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion Sunday at San Francisco State.
The host Gators snapped Chico State's record streak of 13 straight without a loss to start the season, along with its 20-match regular-season unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win at Cox Stadium, notching the match winner in the 90
th minute.
Chico State slipped to 8-1-5 overall and 7-1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with two matches to play. San Francisco State wrapped up its conference schedule at 9-5-2 overall and 7-3-2 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats will enter next week's home matches against Cal State San Marcos (Thursday) and UC San Diego (Saturday) with 23 points and tied for second place with the Gators. UC San Diego tops the table with 27 points. Sonoma State is fourth with 22 points, and Cal State San Marcos is fifth with 20.
The Wildcats have already secured a CCAA Tournament berth.
The top two teams following Saturday's action will receive a first-round bye into the CCAA Tournament semifinals. The third- and fourth-place teams will host a first-round CCAA Tournament match Tuesday. The fifth- and sixth-place teams will be on the road Tuesday.
Chico State led 1-0 for the majority of Sunday's match, staked to the lead on Susanna Garcia's sensational strike in the 22
nd-minute.
Following an offsides call, Nicole Marquez flicked on Brenna Meier's free kick from near the midfield stripe. It fell to Sarah Emigh, who had a step on her defender, took two quick dribbles forward, and slid a pass forward to Garcia on a run down the left side.
Garcia's first touch was not her best and allowed the defender to catch up. But the freshman quickly made things right. She out-fought the defender to keep possession, then touched the ball onto her left foot, and from just inside the top-left corner of the 18-yard box, lofted a gorgeous chip into the far side netting just inside the post.
The goal was Garcia's team-leading fifth of the season and her third in the past four matches. Emigh's assist was her first of the year.
The Gators equalized in the 72
nd minute and won the match on a chip from the top of the 18-yard box with 43 seconds remaining in regulation following a free kick.
The Wildcats host Cal State San Marcos Thursday at 4:30 p.m. on Wildcat Food Pantry night. Fans are asked to bring a donation to support the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry, which exists to support the estimated 4,000 Chico State students who face food insecurity. Canned and boxed foods, hygiene products and cash donations will all be accepted. The pantry is currently in need of canned protein (black and refried beans, chicken, and fish), canned meals (stews, chili, soups), hygiene products, and healthy snacks (protein bars, nuts, dried fruit).
You can also text "chicocares" to 71777 to make a monetary donation.
Saturday, the Wildcats' senior class will be honored prior to an 11:30 a.m. kickoff versus UC San Diego in the regular-season finale for both teams. The CCAA Tournament begins the following Tuesday night.
