Jones' golden goal extends win streak to 7

Wildcats extend home unbeaten streak to 21

It's been said that sometimes the best offense is a good defense. That is especially the case when the defense provides the only goal of the day.

Center back Abbie Jones headed home Korie Bozart's corner kick for the golden goal with just 5:59 remaining in the second overtime period as the Chico State women's soccer team won its seventh straight and extended its school record unbeaten streak to 12 with a 1-0 win against Humboldt State Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium.

The Wildcats remain tied atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings at 7-0-1 with 22 points and have four matches remaining to co-leader Sonoma State's two. UC San Diego, which will visit Chico State for the final match of the regular season, is lurking one point back.

Sunday's victory put the Wildcats (8-0-4 overall) in solid position. But it did not come easily.

Goalkeeper Brenna Meier made two spectacular saves among her three—all of which came in the first half—in logging her sixth shutout in nine starts this season.

After an evenly-played first half, the Wildcats completely dominated play, out-shooting the visitors 14-1 and earning a 7-0 edge in corner kicks after intermission.

But it wasn't until Jones' effort that the Wildcats could rest easy. Just before Bozart was ready to take the corner, Jones jogged into the box from near the midfield stripe and found an open space near the far post. She went unmarked, Bozart hit her target, and Jones headed the ball down and into the back of the net on one bounce.

With the win, the Wildcats extended their home unbeaten streak to 21 matches and moved to within one win of the school record for consecutive victories.

They'll attempt to match the record Wednesday afternoon when they take on Stanislaus State in Turlock. A match at San Francisco State Sunday will mark their final road match of the regular season. The Wildcats return home in two weeks to take on Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego to wrap up the regular season.
