ARCATA, Calif.—At 5-0-0 Chico State is the last remaining unbeaten team in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action. The 25th-ranked Wildcats also remain unscored upon in conference play. Justin Bethke delivered the match winner in the second period of sudden victory overtime in a 1–0 victory over Humboldt State Friday at College Creek Field.
Damion Lewis turned away four Lumberjacks shots, two in the first half and two in the second half, in logging his sixth consecutive clean sheet. Bethke, Joshua Belda, Coby Cueva, and Ryan Caro played every second as his last line of defense.
Then Caro and Bethke teamed up with Eruvey Arceta for the match winner with just over six minutes remaining. Arceta struck a corner kick to Caro beyond the far post, and the 6-foot-2 defender headed it back in front of the goal where Bethke punched it home for his first collegiate goal.
The match featured the final two unbeaten CCAA squads. Humboldt State slipped to 6-2-0 oveall and 3-1-0 in conference play.
Chico State is now 7-2-0 overall.
The Wildcats probed the Lumberjacks defense throughout the match, registering 19 shots and 11 corners. The last of each proved to be the difference. They enjoyed a 4-0 edge in shots and 3-0 edge in corners in the extra periods.
Winners of seven straight on the road dating back to last season, Chico State will take all of its impressive streaks to Rohnert Park for a 2 p.m. showdown with rival Sonoma State Sunday.
