’Cats collect sixth straight shutout in scoreless draw

Remain atop the CCAA table at 5-0-1

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.—The Chico State men's soccer team remains unscored upon in California Collegiate Athletic Association play following a scoreless draw at Sonoma State Sunday afternoon.

Damion Lewis made a trio of saves for the Wildcats, now one of just three teams in the program's history to hold the opposition scoreless for six straight matches. They'll go for a record-tying seventh Saturday night at home against UC Santa Cruz.

The 1976 and 1980 Wildcats each put together streaks of six shutouts in a row, and the 1978 Wildcats went seven in a row without allowing a goal.

Following 110 nail-biting minutes Sunday, Lewis and the Wildcats have now kept the opposition off the scoreboard for their last 595 minutes and 52 seconds on the pitch.

Chico State, which entered the weekend ranked No. 25 in the nation, comes home with a record of 7-2-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the CCAA.

With 16 points, the Wildcats lead second-place UC San Diego by three points midway through the conference slate.

Also unbeaten in its last eight road matches (8-0-1) dating back to last season, Chico State is undoubtedly wishing it could have come home with a victory.

Jeremiah Egujie had a shot saved off the line by a Seawolves defender in the second minute, Seawolves' keeper Mitch North just got his fingertips around Frankie Palmer's header from right in front of the right post 1:27 into the second half, and North denied Egujie with a point-blank save five minutes later after he dribbled around three defenders deep into the box.

The Wildcats had seven shots on goal and eight corner kicks. They allowed only three shots on goal and did not surrender a corner.

Chico State will now play five straight at home before wrapping up the regular season with two road matches.
