The opportunities came early and often. All the goals came in the second half. The wait was worth it for the Chico State women's soccer team as Pooja Patel, Lauren Madero, and Sarah Emigh all tallied for the Wildcats in a 3–1 victory over Stanislaus State Wednesday night at University Soccer Stadium.
Chico State improved to 4-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with its third home win in three tries. Stanislaus State fell to 5-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats came up empty in the first half despite numerous promising chances. They had seven shots in the first 26 minutes on the way to out-shooting the visitors 17-8.
Pooja Patel's PK was the 14th goal of her career.
But they broke through in the second stanza thanks to the play of some promising freshmen and steady senior. Freshman Miranda Moses drew a penalty kick in the area in the 51
st minute and Patel netted her first goal of the season and the 14
th of her career to open the scoring.
Stanislaus State struck back with the equalizer in the 62
nd minute, and overtime was looking likely.
That was before freshmen Jazmine Carranza and Lauren Madero hooked up on a beautiful game-winning goal. Carranza played a ball over the top of the defense toward the right corner, putting Madero behind the defense. She cut inside and beat one defender for striking a left-footed shot inside the far post from about 12 yards out.
The Wildcats put the finishing touches on things with just 1:24 to play when Patel hit a rocket toward the far post that was parried away by the keeper, but Emigh, another freshman, was there to clean it up and punched it into the empty net for her first collegiate goal.
Patel's assist was the 18th of her career, moving her into sixth on the school's career top-10 list.
The Wildcats will attempt to move to 4-0 on their home turf on Friday when San Francisco State comes to town for a 4:30 p.m. showdown.
