If there was ever a day that the Chico State baseball team could be forgiven for a deficient day at the ballpark, Saturday was it. Instead, the Wildcats kept right on making history.
Â
A day after clinching its second consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title, the Wildcats walloped Cal State East Bay 14–4 and 10–4. The dugout was boisterous throughout the day. And the Wildcats played their same aggressive style. It was as if they simply love to compete, and win.
Â
With the first victory, they earned Head Coach Dave Taylor his 400
th victory as the Chico State skipper and his 750
th as a Chico State coach. (He was the team's pitching coach from 1997-2004 before getting the head job in 2007.) They also clinched the best home-field winning percentage in the program's history.
Â
With the second win, the Wildcats crept another step closer to a number of milestones. They are now just two wins shy of cementing the program's best conference winning percentage since the 1953 team went 10-0 in the Far Western Conference with five to play. They are four wins shy of clinching the best in-conference CCAA record on record, along with the team's highest regular-season winning percentage since 2002. With two more wins, they would wrap up the second-best winning percentage in conference history and Chico State's best conference winning percentage since the 1953 team went 10-0 in the Far Western Conference.
Casey Costello (left) gets congratulated after his final pitch Saturday. He
earned the win to improve to 11-0 this season.
Riding a nine-game winning streak, Chico State is now 37-7 overall, 30-3 in the CCAA, and 24-1 at home. They have won 12 straight at Nettleton Stadium.
Â
Josh Falco set the tone for the Wildcats, thumping a three-run homer in the first inning of the first game. He finished the day with six RBI. Cameron Santos went 3-for-3 with five RBI and reached base in all five of his plate appearances. Sonny Cortez went 5-for-8 and scored three runs. Casey Henderson also had a big day with four hits, and Dillon Kelley went 3-for-5 and scored four runs. Dallas Porter and Trevor Steinman each smacked a two-run double.
Â
With his three runs, Cortez passed Eric Angerer and Robby Poole and moved into a tie with Jordan Larson for eighth all-time in runs scored at Chico State with 114. The only two-year Wildcats who have scored more are all in the Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame: Dave Mallas (137), Rich Gregory (116), and Bao-nhan Vinh (115).
Â
He has reached base in 19 straight games. But that is only the fourth longest streak on the team. Falco, who has a 14-game hit streak, has reached in 34 in a row. Santos, hitting .633 (19-for-30) during his 9-game hit streak, has reached base safely in 32 straight games. And Kelley has a nine-game hit streak and reached safely in 27 in a row.
Â
Sonny Cortez crosses home plate one of three times Saturday. He now
ranks eighth in school history in runs scored.
Wildcats starter Casey Costello earned the win in game one, improving to 11-0. He is tied with Bush Dalrymple (1949) for most wins without a loss in a season, and tied for seventh all time in victories. He ranks second in the nation in wins.
Â
Cam Greenough earned the win in the nightcap, improving to 8-1. The Wildcats also got at least an inning of scoreless pitching from relievers Grant Larson, Anthony Baleto, Jae Wagner, and Clayton Gelfand Saturday.
Â
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon, which marks the Wildcats final game of the season at Nettleton Stadium. Fans will want to show up early, however, as 16 Wildcat seniors are celebrated prior to their last home game. The senior ceremony is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:30.
Â
Sunday's series finale will broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY and streamed online with video and audio, and audio-only options. Links are available on the baseball schedule page and the calendar section of the homepage at
