Senior Day for the CCAA Champions? It could happen. Needing any combination of wins and UC San Diego losses equaling two to clinch its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association title, the Chico State baseball team hosts Cal State East Bay for a four-game series this weekend, and the Wildcats are hoping to celebrate their seniors on Sunday with the conference title already in hand.
At 34-7 overall and 27-3 in the CCAA, Chico State enters the weekend ranked No. 4 in the nation. Wednesday, the Wildcats were ranked No. 1 in the West in the first official NCAA West Region Poll. Six teams from the West will compete in the NCAA Championship Tournament.
But the Wildcats still have two four-game series remaining before turning their attention toward the postseason. They also have a chance to make some history.
The Wildcats have never won back-to-back regular-season CCAA titles, and they haven't won consecutive conference crowns since winning three in a row from 1996-98.
And by winning six of their final eight regular-season games, the Wildcats would accomplish the following:
- Finish with the program's best conference winning percentage since the 1953 team went 10-0 in the Far Western Conference.
- Post the team's highest regular-season winning percentage since 2002.
- Boast the program's best home winning percentage on record.
Cal State East Bay hopes to spoil the party. At 24-17 overall and 15-14 in the CCAA, the Pioneers are playing for their postseason lives. They are not currently ranked in the region and open the series 1.5 games behind Stanislaus State in the race for the third and final CCAA North Division Tournament berth. (The Wildcats clinched the North Division title last weekend.)
The series starts with a single game Friday night at 6 p.m. under the Nettleton Stadium lights on what should be a gorgeous evening for baseball ball. A noon doubleheader follows Saturday, and the series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon.
Fans will want to show up early on Sunday, however, as 16 Wildcat seniors are celebrated prior to their final home game. The senior ceremony is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:30.
All four games this weekend will broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY and streamed online with video and audio, and audio-only options. Links are available on the baseball schedule page and the calendar section of the homepage at
