’Cats looking to clinch

Wildcats host Cal State San Bernardino a win away from securing a playoff spot

The Chico State baseball team can clinch its 20th postseason appearance in the past 22 seasons this weekend when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino for a three-game series. The action begins with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m. The Wildcats are one win away (or losses by Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay) from clinching a California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament berth, which goes to the top three teams from the CCAA's North and South Divisions.

Ranked No. 4 in the nation, Chico State leads the overall conference standings by 6.5 games over UC San Diego with just 11 to play. The Wildcats could secure the North Division title this weekend as well. The possibilities are many, but the simplest route to wrapping up the North would be a Wildcats' sweep and a loss by Cal State Monterey Bay versus Sonoma State some time during that four-game series.

It's only fitting that playoff possibilities are in the air this weekend, as the Wildcats welcome back members of the 1997 NCAA Championship team, which won the program's first of two NCAA Championships and first of nine NCAA Championship appearances (and West Region titles) in the past 20 years. That amazing group will be celebrated during Sunday's festivities.

Chico State enters the weekend 31-7 overall and 24-3 in the CCAA. The Wildcats lead the conference in team batting average (.305), team ERA (2.69), and lead the nation in team fielding percentage at .983.

Cal State San Bernardino is 11-28 overall and in fifth place in the South Division at 8-19. The Coyotes trail Cal State L.A. by five games in the race for the South's third playoff spot.

All three games will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY. Links to streaming video and audio, as well as live stats, are available in the calendar section and on the baseball schedule page at www.chicowildcats.com.
