CARSON – The Chico State baseball team's 14-game winning streak came to an end last Sunday. So the Wildcats simply started a new streak, completing a three-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 5–3 victory Sunday.
Sonny Cortez went 2-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases, and an RBI, and Cam Greenough threw six strong innings as Chico State improved to 24-5 overall and 17-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. This marked their fourth sweep in five CCAA series.
Greenough gave up just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked only one in improving to 4-0. Grant Larson and Jae Wagner pitched an inning each of scoreless relief, and Anthony
Josh Falco has hit safely in 12 straight
games and reached base in 19 in a row.
Baleto picked up his fifth save, allowing a run on three hits in the ninth.
Chico State scored three runs in the first and led wire-to-wire. Cortez doubled leading off the game and scored on a double-play grounder. Josh Falco doubled later in the inning, and he and Dillon Kelley scored on an error.
Cortez reached on an error, stole second, and came around to score on Dallas Porter's base hit to make it 4–0 in the fourth.
Cal State Dominguez Hills cut the lead in half with two runs in the sixth before the Wildcats got a run back in the eighth on three walks and a hit batter.
Falco has now hit safely in 11 straight games and reached base in 19 in a row. Cameron Santos has reached base safely in each of the last 17 games, and Kelley in each of the last 12.
The Wildcats, currently ranked No. 2 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, No. 3 by Perfect Game USA, No. 10 by D2 Baseball News, and No. 11 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, will attempt to keep their win streak going next weekend. They'll host Cal State San Marcos for three games beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, starting a stretch in which they will play 13 of 16 at home (where they are 12-1) in the month of April.
