’Cats tie, Cougars advance on PKs

Woods’ early goal doesn’t stand

A 1-1 tie between the Chico State and Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament Tuesday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium forced a penalty kick shootout to decide which team would advance.

Cal State San Marcos did not miss, and Cougars goalkeeper Yesenia Bettencourt made the lone save, to lead them into the CCAA Tournament semifinals.

Chico State will now await word on its NCAA Championship fate, which will come during the NCAA Championship selection show Monday at 3 p.m. The Wildcats will get a better idea Wednesday when the penultimate rankings are released. However, those rankings will not include Tuesday's result, which officially goes down as a tie on both teams' official records. The winners of the CCAA and GNAC postseason tournaments, and the PacWest Conference regular-season champs earn automatic qualification into the NCAA Tournament West Regional. Three at-large teams will be selected as well.

Chico State, ranked No. 4 in the West Region prior to winning a pair of road wins over the weekend, is now 11-5-2. Cal State San Marcos, which will take on UC San Diego Friday at 7 p.m., is 8-6-3.

The Wildcats, who ran their home unbeaten streak to 14 matches, took the lead in the first half. Jordan Doukakis' third corner was the charm. Erin Woods got a head on it in front of the near post from six yards out and planted inside the right post for her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 22nd minute. The assist was Doukakis' fourth.

The Wildcats came close on a couple of previous Doukakis corners. Brielynn Tovani got a head on the first one, and it appeared ticketed inside the right post, before Cougars Bettencourt got a hand on it to tip it just wide. On the ensuing corner, Lia Kilgore stretched, but could not get enough of a shot from inside the box and Pooja Patel's follow sailed high.

Korie Bozart missed just high with her shot toward the far post from a tough angle with 11:30 to go in the half.

The Wildcats settled for a 1-0 lead at the half.

Cal State San Marcos evened things up on a quality strike from Jessica Harloe in the 59th minute. Kayla Anderson set it up by playing the ball out of the crowded box to Harloe near the top-right corner of the box. Harloe one-timed it into the far upper-V for her first goal of the season.

Neither team took a particularly dangerous shot after that.
