They couldn't quite find the icing to top it off, but the Chico State men's soccer team had its cake by the ocean Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats played to a scoreless draw at unbeaten Point Loma with the Pacific Ocean looming just beyond the goal at the west end of the pitch.
Point Loma, picked in the preseason to finish second in the Pacific West Conference and receiving votes in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll, was coming off an impressive weekend in which it beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-0 and drew with Cal State L.A. 1-1. But Wildcats goalkeeper Damion Lewis made four saves in goal to notch his first clean sheet in goal for the Wildcats.
Chico State is now 1-1-1 heading into Saturday's 12:30 p.m. showdown at California Baptist.
Point Loma outshot the Wildcats 18-12, but the Wildcats enjoyed a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Each team took four corner kicks.
Omar Nuño, who was coming off a hat trick against 11
th-ranked Seattle Pacific, nearly gave the Wildcats the lead in the opening minute of the second half, but Sea Lions' goalkeeper Michael Lambert denied him with a beautiful save, one of seven on the day.
Nuño led the Wildcats with five shots (four on goal), and Rajaee DeLane let loose with three shots (two on goal).
Chico State's back line of Donta'e Garcia, Coby Cueva, Matthew Tarr, and Sasha Peranteau kept the Point Loma attack and bay for most of the day.
