RIVERSIDE – The Chico State men's soccer team's lapse spanning the last 12 minutes of the first half and first 12 minutes of the second cost the Wildcats a chance at a second good road result this weekend.
California Baptist out-shot the Wildcats 6-0 during that stretch, scoring twice in the process, on the way to a 2-1 win over the Wildcats at Lancer Soccer Field.
Omar Nuño converted a penalty kick in the 69
th minute to cut the deficit in half, but Lancers goalkeeper Noah Oyler turned away promising shots by Rajaee DeLane and Mikey Hirsch to thwart Chico State's comeback attempt.
Frankie Palmer set up the penalty with a rocket toward the near post from 30 yards out. Oyler dove to clear it away, but DeLane was fouled from behind while chasing the rebound in front of the net.
Nuño beat the keeper, who guessed the wrong way, for his fourth goal of the season.
California Baptist opened the scoring after Sebastian Wiesboeck took a poor clearance attempt and quickly knocked it into the top-right corner of the box for Matthew Bernard, who caught a defender flat-footed. Wildcats' goalkeeper Damion Lewis tried to beat Bernard to the ball, but Bernard got there first slipped it into an open net in the 34
th minute.
The Lancers made it 2-0 when Marec Baptiste headed home Luca Tschaidse's corner at the far post in the 57
th minute.
Outside of that 24-minute stretch, the Wildcats held a 12-3 advantage in shots and 7-1 edge in shots on goal.
Chico State fell to 1-2-1, while California Baptist improved to 3-0-0.
Chico State opens California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next weekend on the road at San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
