SAN FRANCISCO – The Chico State men's soccer team dropped its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener in heartbreaking fashion Friday, surrendering the winning goal with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation of a 1-0 loss.
Chico State goalkeeper Damion Lewis' sixth save of the day was a deflection that fell to San Francisco State's Jordan Wusstig. He made a quick pass to Ashley Watson, who deposited the close-range try into the back of the net.
The Wildcats' offense, which has scored just once outside of a 3-2 win against then-11
th-ranked Seattle Pacific, had a number of near misses. Carter Johnson hit the crossbar in the 44
th minute, and his 78
th-minute try was saved off the line. In the 70
th minute, Omar Nuño's blast from inside the box was also cleared off the line with a header. The Gators' goalkeepers also combined for a trio of saves.
The teams took 16 shots apiece. Nuño led the way with six.
Chico State is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the CCAA. San Francisco State improved to 5-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats are back in action Sunday at Cal State Monterey Bay. The match is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.
