AZUSA – Offensive firepower was in short supply Saturday for the Chico State women's soccer team, but the Wildcats' defense more than rose to the task of shutting down host Azusa Pacific. After a double overtime win in their season opener against California Baptist, the 'Cats once again logged 110 minutes of action against the Cougars, with the two teams finishing the evening in a 0-0 tie.
The Wildcats went undefeated on their season-opening road trip, returning to Chico with a 1-0-1 record on the season.
Chico State only registered three shots the entire night, with Carlie Reader providing the Wildcats' lone shot on goal. Azusa Pacific didn't have a whole lot of scoring opportunities, either, as the 'Cats' defense held the Cougars to just 10 shots Saturday.
Reader got a shot off less than two minutes into the contest, but it would turn out to be the only scoring attempt Chico State would get the entire first half. Wildcat goalkeeper Caitlyn Duval corralled an Azusa Pacific kick in the 25th minute, one of four saves she would collect on the evening.
In the 57th minute, Reader ripped a shot on goal that was saved by Cougars' goalie Zoey Bauman. Shelby Lanksbury's bid to put the 'Cats on the scoreboard with 10 minutes to play in regulation was blocked, and the match eventually went into overtime.
Chico State was unable to get off a shot in either 10-minute stanza, while Duval came up with clutch saves in both the first and second overtime period to keep Azusa Pacific off the board and record her second career shutout as a Wildcat. When the clock finally ticked down, both teams would have to be content with a hard-fought scoreless tie.
The Wildcats have three home matches scheduled next week. Chico State will host Seattle Pacific in a 7 p.m. tilt Wednesday at University Soccer Stadium, followed by a Friday night matchup against Holy Names. Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. the 'Cats entertain the Urban Knights of Academy of Art.
