Hunter Haworth steadied the ship after a shaky first game and led the Chico State baseball team to a 9-2 victory in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader split against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Wildcats dropped the first game 4-2, committing three errors that led to three unearned runs. The Toros took advantage of two eighth-inning errors to break a 2-all tie.
But Haworth responded with his best start of the season, firing six shutout innings for the 23
rd-ranked Wildcats. The sophomore surrendered just three hits, walked one, and struck out four to earn the win and improve to 2-0.
Cody Snider was 6-for-8 at the plate Saturday
with a double and three RBI.
Stuart Bradley got the last four outs for his first save of the season.
Offensively, Cody Snider sparked the Wildcats with three hits, including a double, and three RBI. Cody Bistline hit his second home run of the season.
Chico State is now 24-10 overall and 14-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Wildcats and Toros wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m. at Nettleton Stadium.
Chico State ace Clayton Gelfand certainly pitched well enough to win the opener. He allowed four runs (one earned) on nine hits in eight innings. The CCAA's ERA-leader struck out nine and didn't walk a batter.
The Wildcats trailed 1-0 after allowing an unearned run in the first. Snider's first of six hits on the day started a two-run rally in the second. Andru Cardenas had an RBI-bunt single and Sonny Cortez a sacrifice fly.
But the Wildcats mustered just four hits outside of that inning, and then errors opened the door for the Toros, now 15-18 overall and 9-13 in the CCAA.
In the nightcap, Chico State scored three times in the third and never trailed. Cortez got things started with a one-out double, Dillon Kelly had an infield RBI-single, and then Snider slammed a two-run double to dead center. Bistline homered down the left-field line in the fourth to make it 4-0.
It was 4-2 in the eighth with Toros on second and third when Stuart entered. He saved the game right then, getting a check-swing flyout to right to end the threat.
The Wildcats broke it open in the bottom-half of the fame using the ground attack. Snider's line single to center started things and then the Wildcats rallied with two infield singles, two hit-by-pitches and a walk to score five times.
Josh Falco was hit by a pitch in front of Bistline, whose infield single forced a hurried throw that got away and allowed Snider to score. Tony Roque then blooped an RBI single over the drawn-in infield. After Cortez walked, Cameron Santos' infield single plated another run.
Ben Gamba's grounder made it 8-2, and after Kelley was plunked, Snider drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-2.
The Wildcats maintained their one-game lead on Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay atop the CCAA North Division standings.
