Snider a smashing success in L.A.

Junior finishes single shy of the cycle and drives in seven

LOS ANGELES – Cody Snider finished a single shy of the cycle and drove in seven runs as the Chico State baseball team dominated Cal State L.A. Friday night to start their three-game series. The 'Cats put seven runs on the scoreboard before the fourth inning and went on to win 12-0.

Snider smacked a two-run double in the first, a two-run triple in the third and a three-run homer in the eighth. The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, native's seven RBI tied Josh Meagher for the most by a Wildcat in the Dave Taylor era and fell just one shy of Rich Gregory's school record.

22356
Josh Falco went 4-for-4 Friday and is now hitting a team-best .432 in
conference play.
Josh Falco also had a memorable day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Ben Gamba, Sonny Cortez and Dillon Kelley added two hits apiece.

Starting pitcher Clayton Gelfand worked six innings of scoreless baseball while striking out a career-high 10. The junior ace was in control of all of his pitches during the outing, especially his fastball, which lived on the corners of the plate all night. Gelfand improved to 4-2 and combined with Noah Villegas, Peter Lecce and Colton Fletcher for a six-hit shutout – the team's sixth of the season.

Cal State Los Angeles' normal Friday starter, Ralph Ramirez, missed the start. The Golden Eagles certainly missed their ace, who boasts a 1.72 ERA. He was replaced by sophomore Christian Broussard, who didn't miss many bats early on, allowing seven runs on eight hits in the first three frames.

The 'Cats pushed four runs across in the first inning. Cortez once again set the table - this time with a leadoff walk that extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 16. He advanced to second on a Cameron Santos grounder, stole third, and scored on an errant throw. Gamba and Kelley got on following the Cortez speed demonstration and were double home by Snider. Falco promptly singled Snider home.

The Wildcats tacked on three more runs in the third. Gamba and Kelley set things up with consecutive singles before Snider tripled off the wall. Falco's single plated Snider.

21775
Starting pitcher Clayton Gelfand
struck out a career-high 10.
In the eighth, Cody Bistline and Jerrett Maas singled ahead of Snider's shot over the right-field wall. It was his first home run as a Wildcat. After Falco's fourth hit, Dallas Porter was hit by a pitch and then Andru Cardenas ripped a two-run double down the right field line to wrap up Chico State's scoring.

The Golden Eagles only mustered six hits on the day. Dakota Hernandez and Ryan Welker led the way with two hits each.

Chico State improved to 15-6 overall with a 5-4 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State L.A. dropped to 6-16 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA.

The series will wrap up with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. at Reeder Field in Los Angeles. The game will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY.
