Gelfand extends shutout streak as ’Cats claim series opener

Chico State improves to 4-0 with second shutout

Clayton Gelfand is the only remaining holdover from the Chico State baseball team's 2014 West Region Championship team. Through his first two starts of 2016, the junior pitcher is performing like he wants to win another one.

Gelfand threw six shutout innings, extending his season-starting scoreless streak to 13, to lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 win against Point Loma Nazarene University Friday at Nettleton Stadium.

Josh Falco drove in the winning run with an RBI-single in the first.
The Wildcats improved to 4-0, while Point Loma dropped to 0-1. The Sea Lions return 21 players and their entire starting rotation from last season's 33-18 squad that advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional.

Gelfand combined with relievers Stuart Bradley, Torgen Soderlund and Hunter Haworth for a six-hitter and Chico State second shutout of the season. Gelfand, who allowed five hits and a walk while striking out four, has started both. He's allowed just nine baserunners and struck out nine in 13 innings of work.

Jerrett Maas and Tony Roque had two hits apiece to pace the Chico State offense. Roque scored a run and drove in another. Josh Falco also had a hit and an RBI and threw out a runner at home. And Sonny Cortez had a hit, a sacrifice, stole a base, and scored a run.

The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Cortez singled up the middle leading off, stole second, moved third on Ben Gamba's infield hit, and then scored on Falco's single through the right side.

Sparked by Roque's leadoff hit, the Wildcats tacked on another run in the third. He moved to second on Cortez's sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on a throwing error.

Chico State tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Dillon Kelley and Cody Snider singled to set things up. Kelley scored when Sea Lions pitcher Kellen Sheppard threw Maas' bunt hit down the first-base line. Roque's RBI-grounder plated Snider to make it 4-0.

Gelfand, Bradley, Soderlund and Haworth made the lead stand up.

Gelfand got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth by striking out five-hitter Joseph Keller on what would be his last pitch of the day. Bradley produced a 1-2-3 seventh without letting a ball reach the outfield. Soderlund did the same in the eighth. And Haworth worked around a one-out bunt single with consecutive strikeouts to end the game.

The important West Region series concludes with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
