The Chico baseball team entered this weekend unbeaten. Academy of Art was still in search of its first win. The Wildcats had never lost to the Urban Knights, winning the first 13 meetings between the teams.
That all changed Friday.
The Urban Knights got a three-hit shutout from Brett Bovee in a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats in the first game of a three-game series at Nettleton Stadium.
Chico State starter Clayton Gelfand extended his season-opening scoreless innings streak to 18 and two-thirds innings before Academy of Art scratched across two runs in the sixth.
Gelfand (1-1) allowed those two runs on five hits and struck out six in six innings of work.
The Wildcats got a leadoff single from Sonny Cortez, a line single to center off the bat of Cody Snider in the second and Jerrett Maas' leadoff bunt single in the fifth, but that was it. Snider's hit gives him a safety in each of the Wildcats' first seven games.
Bovee (1-1) walked two, hit a batter, and struck out one in the complete-game shutout.
The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
