Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Luke Reid - Sports Information Director (lreid@csuchico.edu)

Nuno nets brace as men’s soccer wins home opener

Wildcats waltz into conference play on three-match unbeaten streak

"Coffee's for closers only," Alec Baldwin's character famously snarled in the tense real estate salesman drama Glengarry Glen Ross. Taking that cue, Omar Nuno would have had every right to walk directly off the pitch to the concession stand after the final whistle to slam one of its newest additions – a cup of Peet's cold brew – following the Wildcats' 2-1 win against Holy Names in their 2015 home opener.

Nuno had two good scoring opportunities on Friday and slammed both into the back of the net. A 22nd-minute sub, Nuno drew the Wildcats even with his first tally just 56 seconds before halftime. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College scored the match winner in the 57th minute.

Chico State, unbeaten in its final three non-conference matches, improved to 2-2-1, while Nuno climbed closer to the top of the California Collegiate Athletic Association scoring list with his third and fourth tallies of the season.

Nuno was set up beautifully both times. Carter Johnson was credited with the first assist. The sophomore midfielder played a long pass while approaching the midfield stripe into space on the left flank, setting up Nuno one-on-one with his defender. Nuno angled toward the near post while creating some space with his size and dribble, waited patiently for the goalkeeper to commit to attack, and then laced a rocket over his left shoulder and inside the far post.

Matt Hurlow had the second helper. The two combined with Sean Bowker for some nice ball movement near the top right corner of the 18-yard box, creating a small window for Hurlow to hit Nuno posting up inside the box. Nuno nestled the ball while spinning toward the outside and then slammed a shot inside the near post.

Chico State's defense bought the Wildcats plenty of time to come back after allowing a penalty-kick goal in the 38th minute. After allowing three shots in the opening 20 minutes and then Ignacio Alvarez's PK, the Wildcats didn't surrender another shot.

Chico State was forced to play a man down after Sean Gallagher was issued a red card for a vehement verbal defense of his goalkeeper, Triston Montoya, who sustained a bloody nose in a nasty collision in the box. But even playing with 10 men for the final 3:50, the Wildcats held the Hawks without a shot.

Andrew Matthews subbed in and combined with Montoya (who notched the Wildcats' only save of the night) for the clean sheet.

The Wildcats now turn their attention to CCAA play, which they begin next weekend with matches at Humboldt State Friday at 3 p.m. and Sonoma State Sunday at 2.

Chico State's conference home opener is against Cal State East Bay on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m.
