Fifteen seniors will take the field at Nettleton Stadium for the final time Sunday when the Chico State baseball team likely caps its 2015 season with its annual Senior Day festivities.
It's been a frustrating campaign for the 'Cats, who will miss out on the postseason barring a miracle in the final two weekends of conference play. They bring an overall record of 17-22 into action. The Wildcats are in seventh place California Collegiate Athletic Association standings at 16-20.
Chico State, which has a bye on the final weekend of conference play, would need to win at least three of four this weekend against visiting Cal State East Bay (14-25, 11-21) to have a chance and then need a lot of fortuitous results to reach the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Wildcats trail fourth-place Cal State L.A. by four games.
Though seniors Luke Barker, Ryan O'Shea, Cody Slader, Peter Miller, Robert Hook, Connor Huesers, Dylan Garcia, Danny Miller, Gordon Deacon, Alex Mistuloff, Tyler Madrid, Derek Sesma, Robert Engels, Kurt Laver and Jace Puckett won't likely get to finish their careers in the postseason, the group still has much to be proud of.
Arrive early Sunday for the festivities, which will begin around 10:30 a.m.
The series starts Friday at 6 p.m. in a game Barker will likely start. He enters the weekend ranked third in school history in appearances and saves, fourth in strikeouts and innings pitched and tied for ninth in victories.
O'Shea, who needs two more strikeouts to break into the school's career top-10 in that category, was the team's closer for much of the season, but made his first start since 2013 last weekend.
Offensively, this will mark the last chance for Cody Slader and Danny Miller to move up the top-10 lists. Slader ranks seventh in stolen bases and fourth in sacrifice hits. He needs one more triple to break into the top 10. Miller's nine pinch hits are third in school history and just one off the career record shared by Ryan Watson and Ryan Wulfert.
Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at noon.
All four games will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY. Streaming audio, video and live stats will be available on the homepage and baseball schedule page at
