Baseball drops series finale at 11th-ranked CPP

Alev elevates offense with first two collegiate hits, including RBI double

POMONA – Dylan Garcia and Andrew Carrillo stayed hot and Tyler Alev notched his first two collegiate hits but the Chico State baseball team dropped the series finale at 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona 7-3 Sunday at Scolinos Field.

Garcia, who hit .533 this weekend, reached base three times. He was 1-for-2 with an RBI-single, walk and was hit by a pitch. Carrillo, the team's leading hitter at .360, went 2-for-4 and scored a run. And Alev went 2-for-4, including an RBI double against First Round Major League Baseball Draft prospect Cody Ponce.

The Wildcats dropped to 10-12 overall and 9-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 19-7 overall and 11-5 in the CCAA.

Tyler Alev's first collegiate hit was
an RBI double against First Round
Major League Baseball Draft
prospect Cody Ponce.
Clayton Gelfand (1-2) took the loss for Chico State, allowing four runs on four hits and five walks in three-plus innings of work.

Gelfand gave up two runs in the first on three walks, a passed ball and an RBI-single.

Alev followed Carrillo's two-out infield single with a double to right-center in the second that cut the lead to 2-1.

The Broncos got the run back in the bottom-half of the inning, however, and then took advantage of a walk and hit-by-pitch to score twice more in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.

The Wildcats had a chance to get right back in the game in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two out. Garcia's infield single plated one run, but Tyler Madrid popped out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The lead was 6-2 when Garcia drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and eventually scored on a wild pitch and throwing error.

Cal Poly Pomona added an insurance run in the eighth before J.J. Franklin retired the Wildcats in order in the ninth.

The Wildcats will be back in action at home next weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay. The four-game series starts with a single game Friday night at 6.
