The Chico State baseball team did the little things to make sure one big swing didn't beat them Sunday at Nettleton Stadium.
Â
Alex Micheals scored the winning run after reaching on a bunt single.First, there are the little things the Wildcats did: James Hatano's walk, Alex Michaels' bunt single and Cody Slader's stolen base were all crucial parts of the Wildcats' 4-2 win against Cal State San Bernardino in the finale of a four-game series. And there were the little things they didn't do: Three Chico State pitchers pounded the strike zone, allowing no free passes, while the defense played error-free.
Â
Together it was enough to overcome one big swing of the bat by Cal State San Bernardino's Grant Buchanan, a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth.
Â
Clayton Gelfand earned his first collegiate win for the Wildcats, who improved to 9-9 overall and 8-7 in the California College Athletic Association (CCAA). Robert Hook got the Wildcats to the ninth with two scoreless innings before Ryan O'Shea collected his second save in as many days with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Â
Hatano, who was twice hit by pitches and reached base three times, helped the Wildcats draw first blood in the fifth. He drew a two-out walk and then hustled to second on a grounder in the hole to beat the throw on Cody Bistline's infield hit. Hatano again showed great hustle in scoring from second on a fielding error on the shortstop for the first run of the game.
Â
Andrew Carrillo's RBI-single plated Bistline later in the inning for a 2-0 lead.
Â
It didn't last.
Â
James Hatano (foreground) and Cody Slader helped spark rallies.Gelfand gave up his first career home run in the sixth when Buchanan turned on a pitch and caught the jet stream blowing out to right for a game-tying two-run blast.
Â
Gelfand struck out the last two batters he faced before the Wildcats got him a run in the bottom-half of the fame to put him back in position to win it.
Â
Michaels set things in motion with a beautiful bunt hit. He moved to second on a wild pitch before Connor Huesers hammered a single to left to bring him home with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Â
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the seventh when Cody Slader singled, stole second, and scored on Sean Smith's base hit to right.
Â
Huesers and Bistline finished with two hits apiece for the Wildcats, who travel to 8
th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona for a four-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
