ROHNERT PARK – The Chico State women's basketball team's final road swing of 2014-15 got off to a positive start Friday in Rohnert Park, as the Wildcats handed host Sonoma State a 56-51 defeat in The Wolves' Den. The victory snapped the 'Cats' three-game losing streak and completed a sweep of the season series with the Seawolves.
Friday's win moved Chico State to 9-14 on the season and 6-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Sonoma State dropped its 13th straight decision to fall to 6-17 overall and 4-15 in CCAA play.
Chico State featured a balanced offensive attack, with three players scoring in double figures. Hannah Womack led the way with 13 points, with Whitney Branham and Annie Ward contributing 12 and 10 points, respectively. Ashtyn Anderson chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds, while Michelle Walker pulled down eight boards for the victorious Wildcats.
It was Sonoma State that jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening half, but the Wildcats responded with eight unanswered points – Womack, Ward and Brooke Bowen all delivering buckets – to put Chico State on top 8-5. After the Seawolves knotted up the contest at 11-all, Womack and Ward buried back-to-back 3-pointers to put the 'Cats back in front 17-11. Branham kept the Wildcats in the lead with a trio of jumpers, and free throws by Anderson and Haley Cremen late in the period extended Chico State's advantage to 31-22 at halftime.
A Branham 3-pointer to start the second half gave the 'Cats their biggest lead of the game, only to see Sonoma State's offense finally get untracked, outscoring Chico State 15-2 to go up 38-37 with 11:53 to play. The Wildcats answered with a 7-0 run – Anderson hit a jumper and converted a three-point play and Chanelle Di Croce dropped in a jumper – to put Chico State back in front 43-37. The 'Cats would not trail again.
The Seawolves pulled to within 45-40, but the Wildcat defense held Sonoma State to just three field goals over the final 6:44. Still, Sonoma was only down four with one minute remaining, but clutch free throws down the stretch by Branham and Womack kept the Seawolves at arm's length, and Chico State was able to run out the clock and come away with the 56-51 victory.
The Wildcats play their final road game of the season Saturday when they travel to The Swamp to take on San Francisco State (0-23, 0-19 CCAA). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
