Upset hopes vanish in a flash

Wakefield scores first collegiate goal at 7th-ranked Dominguez Hills

CARSON – A 92-second span sunk the Chico State men's soccer team's hopes of pulling off an upset at 7th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night.

The match was scoreless until Joey Chica broke the seal with 21:46 remaining in regulation. Just 1:32 later the Toros converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0.

Chico State cut the lead in half less than a minute later when Dylan Wakefield headed home Esten Schroeder's cross for his first goal of the season. But the Wildcats could not score the equalizer before time ran out.

The Wildcats fell to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the loss, while Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 10-1-2 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0-2.

Chico State is back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cal State L.A.
