The Chico State men's soccer team became just the second squad in 2015 to keep the high-scoring Stanislaus State offense from putting a crooked number on the board Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they could find the back of the net at all in a 1-0 loss to the Warriors.
Stanislaus State improved to 10-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while Chico State dipped to 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the CCAA.
Luis Hernandez scored the match winner in the 44
th minute. A great ball in from Rafael Chavez left Hernandez in a dangerous spot at the top-left corner of the box. He lost the ball momentarily to a Chico State defender, but after winning it back, hit a blast inside the near post from 17 yards.
That proved to be one of only five shots on goal all day.
The Wildcats had 11 shots, including six off the boot of Matt Hurlow, but only one was on target. And it almost tied the match.
Dylan Wakefield was at the near post for a Sean Gallagher throw-in and flicked it toward the upper-V, but lankly Stanislaus State goalkeeper Russ Klabough tipped it up and over the net for his lone save.
Chico State's Triston Montoya had three saves in from of a stingy back – Justin Walmsley, Isaiah Dargan, Sean Gallagher, Coby Cueva and subs Matthew Tarr and Sasha Peranteau – that limited the Warriors to a season-low 11 shots.
