Duncan delivers in triple-overtime

Wildcats play third consecutive OT game, beat San Francisco State 61-59

Robert Duncan ran down his errantly-dribbled basketball in the lane, pivoted left, and shot a high-arching fadeaway jumper from eight feet that found the bottom of the net with 1.3 seconds remaining. In the third overtime! No one would have begrudged Duncan had he allowed himself to fall softly onto his back for a quick nap.

Instead, he and the Wildcats played one last second of defense and finally got a last-second stop to beat San Francisco State 61-59. The Gators scored in the final 10 seconds of regulation, the first overtime and the second overtime to keep their hopes alive.

"After three overtimes we needed to get out of here," said Duncan. "With the win, of course."
Duncan led all players with 48 minutes and finished with 13 points, five assists and five steals. Jordan Semple and Corey Silverstrom added eight points apiece for a Chico State team that limited San Francisco State to just 12 first-half points but scuffled offensively, misfiring on 42 of 62 shots, including 20 of 25 from beyond the arc. Semple added 13 rebounds and Silverstrom three steals.

The Wildcats are getting used to this overtime thing. Friday marked their third straight overtime game and fourth in their last six. They've won the last two to improve to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats are a game behind conference co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Stanislaus in a two-way tie for second with UC San Diego.

They host fifth-place Sonoma State Saturday at 7:30.

San Francisco State, 6-7 overall, dropped its third straight game to fall into a four-way tie for seventh at 4-5.

The Gators did not go down easily, however. Udun Osakue tied the game with a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Derrick Brown scored on a drive with six ticks left in the first overtime to force a second. And then Osakue sank another three with nine seconds left in the second overtime to force the third.

Osakue finished with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.
